Georgian Double Handled Jelly Glass

18th century
Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English, double handled jelly glass dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a bell-shaped bowl measuring 7.4 cm (3 inches) in diameter at the upper rim. The bowl is plain and sits directly on a domed foot which measures 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 11 cm (4.4 inches) in height and measures 11.8 cm (4. 7 inches) across the extremities of the two applied handles. The handles were first affixed to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom with well made curlicues. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is some very light water staining to the bowl.

It is made from lead metal weighing 165 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a jelly glass was designed specifically for serving jelly, syllabub, and cold gelatin-based desserts at formal dining tables. The double-handled form allowed diners to easily hold and pass the glass during multi-course meals.

Georgian jelly glasses were predominantly hand-blown using lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided clarity, weight, and light refraction compared to standard soda glass.

Look for a pontil mark or smoothed pontil scar on the underside of the foot, subtle asymmetrical hand-blown variations, tiny embedded air bubbles known as seeds, and a greyish hue characteristic of period lead content.

Display this glass on a dining sideboard, inside a glazed cabinet, or as part of a curated display alongside other historic tableware to highlight its silhouette.

Hand wash gently in tepid water using mild dish soap and a soft cloth, avoiding thermal shock from hot water that can crack lead glass, and dry immediately with a lint-free towel.
