Antique Mahogany Moon Phase Longcase Clock by Parkinson Bros, Batley

19th century
Description

An impressive antique mahogany longcase clock dating from the early 19th century, featuring a richly painted moon-phase dial signed Parkinson Bros, Batley.

The clock is housed within a tall and beautifully proportioned case veneered in finely figured mahogany. Its architectural hood is crowned by an elegant swan-neck pediment centred by a raised finial, while turned columns frame the dial. Further columns flank the trunk door, which displays particularly attractive flame mahogany figuring and restrained inlaid detailing.

The painted dial is the defining feature of the clock. Bold Roman numerals surround a richly illustrated centre depicting a classical royal scene, complemented by a subsidiary seconds dial and twin winding apertures. The corners are decorated with colourful figures and animals, while the arched upper section incorporates a dramatic lunar display with coastal buildings, a sailing vessel and celestial imagery.

The substantial lower case is enriched with book-matched mahogany veneers and crossbanded detail, giving the clock excellent visual presence without appearing excessively ornate.

Longcase clocks combining a signed provincial dial, decorative moon phase and well-figured mahogany case remain highly desirable among collectors. This example offers both genuine horological interest and considerable decorative impact, making it suitable for an entrance hall, drawing room, library or period interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A moon phase longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, incorporates a rotating painted disc above the main dial that tracks the 29.5-day lunar cycle alongside regular timekeeping. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these dials allowed households to track nighttime illumination levels before modern electricity.

Antique longcase clocks were predominantly crafted with cases of solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring decorative flame mahogany or marquetry veneers. The internal movements were constructed from brass plates and cast iron gears, while the clock faces featured hand-painted arch dials or brass spandrels.

Authentic examples typically exhibit hand-cut clockwork gearing, natural wear on the painted or brass dial, and weight-driven mechanisms with lead weights. The clockmakers name and town of operation are frequently hand-painted or engraved directly onto the dial face.

A tall mahogany longcase clock serves as a focal architectural anchor when positioned in an entrance hallway, stair landing, or formal reception room. Pairing dark timber joinery with neutral walls and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic horology and modern design.

Keep the timber cabinet away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking or lifting of the mahogany veneer. The mechanical movement should be professionally serviced and lubricated every five to seven years to maintain accurate timekeeping.
