Fine 19th Century French Ormolu and White Marble Cherub Clock Garniture

19th century
Description

An exceptional 19th-century French ormolu and white marble clock garniture, comprising an impressive mantel clock and a matching pair of five-light figural candelabra.

The central clock is surmounted by two beautifully modelled reclining cherubs, one holding a set of pipes and the other seated beside a bird. Their finely cast features, naturalistic hair and softly draped surroundings demonstrate the accomplished bronze work associated with high-quality French decorative arts of the period.

The enamel dial displays blue Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute track and finely pierced gilt hands. It is framed by an ornate gilt-bronze bezel above a substantial stepped white marble case, enriched with applied floral trails, scrolling foliage and finely detailed classical borders.

The accompanying candelabra form a commanding symmetrical pair. Each features a standing cherub supporting an elaborate arrangement of five naturalistic foliate candle branches, raised above cylindrical white marble pedestals decorated with floral swags and gilt-bronze mounts.

Complete antique clock garnitures of this scale, quality and visual balance are increasingly difficult to source. Their combination of sculpture, horology and decorative craftsmanship gives them lasting appeal among collectors of French ormolu, interior designers and buyers seeking an important focal point for a formal room.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French clock garniture is a decorative three-piece set popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, comprising a central mantel clock flanked by two matching side pieces, typically candelabra, vases, or urns.

These sets were primarily constructed from gilt bronze (ormolu), white or coloured marble, and bronze, often featuring white enamel dials with hand-painted numerals and brass clock movements.

Authentic pieces feature finely chased gilding, cast foundry marks, maker stamps on the brass clock movement plate, hand-painted enamel dials, and natural age-related patina or oxidisation on metal surfaces.

Display the set symmetrically along a marble fireplace mantelpiece or atop a dark wood console table to serve as a focal point, pairing it with contemporary artwork to create a curated contrast.

Dust gilt bronze gently using a dry, soft brush without liquid chemicals, clean marble surfaces using a neutral pH stone cleaner, and have the clock mechanism serviced periodically by a qualified horologist.
