Georgian Baluster Tazza, 23 Cm Diameter

18th century
Description

This is an English, Georgian, baluster tazza dating from the early 18th century, c1730.

The tazza is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated as is the bowl.

The tazza has a shallow bowl measuring 23 cm (9.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl sits on a collar, a wide annulated knop, and an inverted baluster containing an air tear. The stem leads to a domed and folded foot which measures 12.7 cm (5.1 inches) in diameter. The tazza is 12.8 cm (5.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, other significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. There is a small inclusion in the metal of the edge of the bowl rim dating from manufacture.

It is made from good, grey, English lead metal weighing in at 720 g. (~ 1 lb 9 oz.).

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian baluster tazza is an 18th-century shallow, flat glass dish raised on a central shaped stem and wide foot, historically designed to serve sweetmeats, jellies, or fruit at formal dining tables.

These pieces were hand-blown using heavy flint glass or lead crystal, often featuring a baluster stem constructed with internal air bubbles or tears, attached to a folded foot rim for stability.

Authentic examples typically feature a rough snapped pontil mark on the underside of the base, slight hand-blown irregularities, a thick folded foot rim, and substantial physical weight from high lead content.

A glass tazza serves as a refined centrepiece on a dining table or sideboard, suitable for displaying fresh citrus, confectionary, or kept unadorned to showcase its structural silhouette.

Hand wash gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding extreme temperature changes, abrasive cloths, and automated dishwashers to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
