Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tantalus is a wooden cabinet or frame containing glass decanters, designed to keep spirits visible yet securely locked behind a brass or wooden bar mechanism. Popularised in the late 19th century, the name derives from the Greek mythological figure Tantalus.

Victorian tantalus sets were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, paired with heavy cut-glass or crystal decanters. Structural and decorative elements frequently incorporated polished brass or silver-plated mounts.

Authentic period pieces typically display hand-cut lead crystal decanters with original fitted stoppers, hand-carved wood accents, and functional brass locking mechanisms. Age-appropriate wear on the metal mounts and minor inconsistencies in the hand-blown glass also indicate period origins.

Position the tantalus on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or home bar area to serve as a focal point. Pair it with clear glass barware, leather-bound volumes, or polished metal accessories to complement its traditional character.

Clean the wooden framework using a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to maintain the finish. Decanters should be washed by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, ensuring complete drying before returning them to the felt-lined slots.
