georgian facet cut knopped stem wine glass - CATEGORY: ANTIQUE GLASS - DATED 18TH CENTURY

Georgian Facet Cut Knopped Stem Wine Glass

£75    $100    €88
This is a Georgian, English, facet cut stem wine glass dating from the end of the 18th century, c1780.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the under side of the foot.

The glass has a rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.7 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is cut with six petals to the base and gives the illusion of a six-petal flower or rose when viewed from above. This has caused some observers to claim Jacobite sympathy in the design of such glasses, in the theory that they show the Stuart six-petal rose. The bowl sits on an oval facet cut stem with a medial knop. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 16 cm (6.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
