Pair of Doulton Lambeth Faience Cherry Blossom Vases

Description

A pretty pair of late 19th century hand-painted vases, stamped underneath Doulton Lambeth Faience. Both are decorated with cherry blossom over a pale yellow-green ground, with the design slightly different on each vase. The inside of the vases is a contrasting turquoise colour. They are of globular shape and stand on three little feet.

Condition: Both vases have wear to the feet, and one of the feet is chipped. One vase has more obvious crazing to the glaze than the other. There is a small flaw in the neck of one vase, and minor surface wear to both.

Dimensions:

Diameter - 12.5cm

Height - one vase is 14cm tall, the other is 15cm tall.

Doulton Lambeth Faience refers to hand-painted, glazed earthenware ceramics produced at the Lambeth pottery in London during the late nineteenth century. Unlike standard stoneware, faience allowed artists to paint detailed pictorial motifs under glaze, heavily influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and nature.

These vessels are crafted from soft-paste earthenware clays, shaped on a wheel or hand-moulded, and decorated using ceramic slips and underglaze pigments. They feature lead-based transparent glazes, often developing a fine crackle finish during firing.

Authentic pieces generally display impressed factory marks on the base, such as the Doulton Lambeth rosette stamp, date codes, model numbers, and painter monograms indicating the individual decorator.
