Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Unglazed foot rims showing kiln grit: firing methods of late Meiji potteries.
Glaze shows a pale bluish cast with scattered pinholes: early porcelain formulation.
Hand-applied enamels in iron-red and green over underglaze blue: traditional Imari palette.
Slight rubbing to the raised gilding: natural handling over many decades.

These decorative vases are Japanese Imari pieces dating from the period around 1900. Produced in a traditional style, they consist of porcelain with a smooth enamel glaze finished in a distinct palette of cobalt blue, rust red, and gold. Each vessel displays a flared rim, a slender neck, and a pear-shaped body covered in hand-painted chrysanthemum motifs, scrollwork panels, and swirling patterns. The pair measures 23 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter. Originating from overseas export wares popular in English country houses, they show clean surfaces without visible damage or restoration. Placing them on a mantelpiece provides a classic focal point for a traditional or eclectic interior scheme. Their compact footprint also suits placement on a side table, console, or bookshelf within a living room, hallway, or study, where the rich blue and red tones complement various decorative displays.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gold decorations.

It is crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to form a hard-paste porcelain, after which cobalt blue is applied before glazing, followed by additional overglaze enamel colours and gold gilding in subsequent firings.

Authentic pieces typically display a characteristic cobalt blue and iron-red palette combination, hand-painted asymmetry or minor painterly variations between paired items, and unglazed foot rims showing white porcelain clay.

These vases can be placed as a pair on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to introduce historical pattern and contrasting colour against contemporary neutral backdrops.

Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or immersion, as overglaze enamels and gilding can wear over time.
