Very decorative example which is a stunning looking time piece to grace any home.

Note the gilt columns are all hand made.

Porcelain enamelled face with opening hinged glass bezel.

There is a musical device in the bottom case which plays a tune when it strikes on the hour.

The clock is an eight day winder with a brass fretworked lightweight pendulum and has a Silk suspension movement.

Dateline : 1780 -1805 Approx.

Measurements

Height 16 Ins x 8 Ins Width Depth 4 Ins

Condition

The condition is good for the age.

Sold With Notice Below Reflected In Price.

The clock when running in the past was temperamental due to its age and relies on a level surface and not over winding or failing to wind on time which might affect the running or can stop without warning.

This clock is therefore sold as a “non runner”.

as there is a ti y pin missing which attached the pendulum and the musical device key is missing.

Also a silk thread which trip the music to start playing has broke, just need new nylon thread.

Therefore until these small things are attended to, the clock will have no guarantee given to run without periods of stopping, however this hand crafted timepiece is from the era of when Admiral Lord Nelson was alive.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Empire portico clock is a architectural timepiece originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, defined by a central clock movement supported between classical columns reminiscent of a Greco-Roman portico.

These timepieces typically feature a structure crafted from ebonised wood or marble, decorated with gilded bronze (ormolu) or brass mountings, housing a mechanical brass movement with a pendulum.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut gear teeth, cast and hand-chased gilt fittings, period-appropriate dial signatures, and natural signs of age such as gentle wear to gilding and oxidisation on metal surfaces.

A portico clock serves as a focal point when placed atop a fireplace mantelpiece, marble-topped sideboard, or executive office desk, contrasting effectively with minimalist contemporary backdrops.

Dust the exterior gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid polish on gilt surfaces; mechanical and musical movements should be professionally serviced by a horologist every five to seven years.
