Imperial Amphora Monumental Art Nouveau Vase, Austria, C.1896–1910, 51 Cm

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressive monumental Imperial Amphora vase, made in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, circa 1896–1910, during the celebrated manufactory’s artistic golden age. Its imposing scale, sculptural silhouette and elaborate decoration give it a magnificent ceremonial presence.

The circular factory mark depicts the stylised Austro-Hungarian double-headed eagle, with a shield on its chest and outspread wings, surrounded by the inscription IMPERIAL AMPHORA TURN. Together with the separate crown mark, it identifies the vase with the prestigious Imperial Amphora series. These rare and highly collectible works are particularly sought after for their artistic distinction, technical sophistication and association with the finest years of Bohemian Art Nouveau.

Standing 51 cm high, the vase has an elegant elongated body, a broad shaped rim and a spreading ornamental base. Large openwork handles, enriched with scrolling and stylised foliate details, frame the upper body. Particularly striking is the substantial olive-green pierced collar below the neck, where numerous openings with raised borders create a rich interplay of light and shadow.

The warm cream ground is complemented by olive-green and rose-brown tones, with gilding highlighting the rim and ornamental details. Relief scrolls, beadwork, elongated pendants and stylised foliage lend the decoration a jewel-like richness.

The underside bears the circular IMPERIAL AMPHORA TURN eagle mark, a separate crown, AMPHORA and AUSTRIA marks, model number 12000 and additional factory markings.

Established in 1892 with the support of Alfred Stellmacher, Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel brought together outstanding designers and craftsmen. Eduard Stellmacher and Paul Dachsel helped shape its distinctive artistic identity. International success at Chicago in 1893 was followed by gold medals at San Francisco in 1894, Paris in 1900 and St Petersburg in 1901, and further recognition at St Louis in 1904. Amphora remains a dedicated field of collecting, represented in museum collections and specialist publications.

This Edwardian Art Nouveau vase is an earthenware ceramic piece from Austria, produced during the period circa 1896 to 1910. The object has a cream glaze body complemented by olive-green and rose-brown tones, with scrolling handles, a pierced collar with numerous openings, and a flared pedestal base featuring beadwork and relief scrolls. Measuring 51 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, the monument stands upright with an elongated form and a broad shaped rim. The underside carries factory marks including the circular Imperial Amphora Turn eagle and a crown. In a modern home, this piece functions as a decorative display object placed on a sideboard top. The composition relies on the contrast between the pale ceramic surface and the dark brown handles, with symmetrical scrollwork flanking the upper neck and geometric relief patterns accentuating the collar. The vertical pendant hanging down the front body provides structural rhythm above the heavily moulded pedestal base.

Produced predominantly in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) between 1892 and 1915, Amphora pottery is recognized for its organic, sculpted forms, complex glazes, and intricate applied surface ornament such as relief beadwork and pierced handles.

These vessels were typically slip-cast using fine earthenware or terracotta clay. Surface decoration involved hand-applied relief details, reticulated piercing, cold-painted enamels, matte slip glazes, and gilding before undergoing multiple kiln firings.

Authentic pieces generally feature impressed factory marks on the underside, including the red or impressed Amphora crown stamp, Turn-Teplitz Austria, or RStK (Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel), along with four-digit mould numbers and artist cyphers.

A large Art Nouveau vessel serves as a focal accent when placed on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace hearth. Pairing it with simple contemporary furniture allows its detailed silhouette and texture to stand out without visual conflict.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid immersing cold-painted or gilded earthenware in water or using abrasive liquid cleaners, as moisture can compromise unglazed areas and delicate surface finishes.
