Antique Arts and Crafts Oak Wall Clock Eight Day Striking Movement Brass Numerals

1900 - 1920
Description

A very attractive Arts and Crafts oak wall clock with a strong, honest design typical of the period. The circular solid oak dial has a rich colour and grain, set with applied brass numerals and original stylised hands, giving it a bold yet refined look.

The Arts and Crafts movement began in Britain in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production. It focused on quality craftsmanship, simple forms and the use of natural materials. Pieces were designed to be both practical and beautiful, with an emphasis on honest construction rather than heavy ornament, which is why they still feel timeless and work well in both traditional and modern interiors.

The movement is an eight day striking mechanism, meaning it only requires winding once a week and strikes the hours, a practical feature that made these clocks ideal for everyday domestic use.

The shaped oak frame with vertical supports and pendulum below reflects the Arts and Crafts emphasis on craftsmanship, simplicity and quality materials, avoiding unnecessary ornament while still offering strong visual presence.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, prioritising handcrafted woodwork, visible construction, and organic utility. Wall clocks from this period often display solid timber construction, simple geometric forms, cut-out apertures, and functional metalwork such as copper or brass hands and numerals.

These clocks are primarily constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring traditional joinery like mortise and tenon joints. Dial faces feature applied or cut brass, copper, or enamel numerals, housing mechanical pendulum-driven movements engineered for long-term durability.

Authentic examples typically show hand-finished timber surfaces, unlacquered patinated brass, and mechanical movements stamped by established clockmakers of the era. Look for structural details such as exposed pegs, slatted frames, and hand-cut numeral shapes rather than modern stamped components.

Mount the clock on a neutral painted wall or alongside minimalist timber panelling to create a focal point without visual clutter. The warm dark oak tones complement natural materials such as stone, linen, and patinated leather in modern rustic or traditional schemes.

The mechanical movement requires professional oiling every three to five years and a level wall installation to maintain an even pendulum beat. Dust the timber framework gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using abrasive polishes on the patinated brass elements.
