Pair of 18th Century George III Mahogany Bedside Cabinets, C1760

18th century
Description

Exceptional and Very Rare Pair of Mid 18th-Century George III Period Flamed Mahogany Tray-Top Bedside Commodes

An exceptional and very rare matching pair of mid 18th century George III, Chippendale period flamed mahogany tray-top bedside commodes. It is extremely uncommon to find an original pair of bedside cabinet commodes from this period, making these pieces particularly desirable for collectors and interior designers alike.

Each commode features a finely pierced galleried tray top with carrying handles above a single drawer, beautifully figured mahogany cupboard doors and canted corners. Below sits a retractable lower section with its leather cover, a finely fret cut apron and an elegant brass swan neck handle, all raised on square moulded legs.

These cabinets are in good original condition and display the superb craftsmanship and refined proportions typical of the George III period. The richly figured flamed mahogany has developed a deep, warm patina over time, enhancing the depth and character of the timber. This colour and surface are exactly what are most sought after by discerning collectors and decorators.

Combining elegance, functionality and historical importance, this rare pair of 18th-century bedside commodes will make a striking focal point in any refined interior, from a classic English country house setting to a sophisticated contemporary bedroom. Sturdy, strong and ready for everyday use, they offer both decorative presence and practical versatility.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III bedside cabinets, produced in England during the mid-to-late 18th century, were typically crafted from mahogany and designed for bedroom functionality. Commonly known as night commodes or tray-top cupboards, they featured enclosed compartments, gallery tops with cut-out handles, and lower pull-out sections.

These cabinets were primarily constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, valued for durability and grain patterns. Construction methods included hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, and cast brass handles.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand tool usage, such as hand-sawn wood marks and irregular hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings. Oxidisation on untouched secondary timbers, natural surface patination, and period brass hardware further confirm age.

These cabinets function effectively as nightstands flanking a bed or as end tables in a living area. Pairing dark mahogany wood with neutral linen bedding, contemporary lamps, or minimalist decor creates a contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

To preserve antique mahogany, place cabinets away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber finish and protect the patina.
