Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

Traditional longcase clocks are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brass dial faces, weight-driven movements, and hand-joined cabinetry.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration of the movement to the dial, hand-cut joinery in the wooden case, patination on the timber, and maker signatures inscribed on the dial face.

A longcase clock serves as a strong vertical architectural element and functions effectively when placed within an empty corner or a hallway to add historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves placing the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources, ensuring it stands on a level surface, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
