Edwardian Tantalus and Games Compendium

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome mahogany tantalus, fitted with three cut-glass spirit decanters and decorated with attractive brass mounts, complete with its original working key. One decanter has a couple of small chips to the rim, noted for accuracy, though they do not detract from the overall presence of the set. Unlocking the key releases the two doors, opening to reveal twin storage compartments, one of which is velvet-lined. In front of the central decanter sits a discreet button which, when pressed, reveals a hidden drawer designed to store playing cards, counters, cribbage boards, and other gaming pieces. This is a wonderfully characterful piece, both decorative and functional, and would make a distinctive gift for oneself or someone special. A true conversation piece that brings a touch of elegance to any room.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tantalus is a lockable cabinet housing decanters designed to display liquor while securing it from unauthorised access. Combined games compendiums feature secret compartments, folding fronts, and drawers containing traditional parlour games like chess, cribbage, or playing cards.

These sets were typically constructed from solid mahogany, oak, or coromandel wood, accented with nickel-plated or polished brass strapwork. The interior decanters were crafted from heavy lead cut crystal with matching hand-faceted stoppers.

Authentic pieces display fine cabinetmaking features such as dovetailed joinery, functional brass working locks, and heavy hand-cut crystal decanters. Look for maker stamps from recognized cabinetmakers or retailers dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Position the piece on a sideboard, home bar cart, or library desk as a functional decorative accent. Opening the front flaps reveals the detailed craftwork and cut glass, adding historical interest to traditional or eclectic spaces.

Dust the wooden box using a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically while avoiding metal hardware. Hand-wash crystal decanters with warm water and gentle soap, ensuring they dry completely before returning them to the frame.
