This Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase dates from the Meiji period in 1890. The piece displays a cream crackle-glazed surface decorated with hand-painted mandarin ducks, bamboo motifs, and detailed gilded borders featuring orange flowers at the neck and base. Additional visual elements include blue water ripples at the base of the design, a rectangular neck opening, and rich polychrome enamel painting. The vase measures 30 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, signed by Okamoto Ryozan with the Yasuda Company seal. In a contemporary home, this decorative vessel functions as a statement piece displayed upon a sideboard top or as part of an English Country House interior scheme. The design wraps around the earthenware body, presenting a detailed landscape scene with birds and bamboo against the light crackled glaze ground. Collectors of Japanese ceramic art place such signed Satsuma wares in prominent living spaces to highlight the fine enamel work and traditional motifs of the period.

Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese earthenware ceramics that originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its yellowish-cream earthenware body, fine crackle glaze, and intricate polychrome enamel with gilded decoration.

Traditional Satsuma ceramics were crafted using local earthenware clay, fired at relatively low temperatures, and coated with a clear glaze engineered to produce fine surface crazing. Craftspeople then applied detailed enamel pigments and gold paste before undergoing a secondary low-temperature firing process.

Authentic pieces generally feature a distinct ivory-toned body beneath a uniform crackle glaze, micro-detailed hand painting, raised enamel work (moriage), and gilded highlights. Many examples display artist or workshop marks on the underside, often incorporating the Shimazu family crest.

A Satsuma vase serves as an elevated accent piece on a mahogany sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf. Placing the vessel against a neutral or dark backdrop allows the gilded details and cream glaze tones to stand out in both traditional and eclectic modern spaces.

Dust the ceramic surface gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or fine brush. Avoid immersing crackle-glazed earthenware in water or using liquid detergents, as moisture can seep into the glaze fissures and compromise the enamel or gilding.
