Pair Of Masons Ironstone Posy Vases, Bird And Peony, C.1900

£500    $668    €585
A decorative pair of small Masons ironstone posy vases dating to around 1900, executed in the striking Bird and Peony pattern from the Flying Bird decorative family. The scene centres on a bird in flight alongside a bold peony bloom, a composition derived from the earlier Asiatic Pheasant tradition.

The ornament is formed on a blue underglaze outline transfer base, finished with dense enamel colouring and refined gilded highlights that give depth and brilliance to the surface.

Produced as interior display pieces rather than utilitarian wares, these small rounded vase forms were made in more limited numbers than the larger chargers and vases bearing the same pattern and are now considerably scarcer.

Both vases retain the crowned Masons Patent Ironstone China mark to the base.

A highly attractive and uncommon form within Masons Oriental-inspired decorative production.
