A Large Substantial French Louis Xvi Style Gilt Bronze Cartel Wall Clock

19th century
Description

A Large and Substantial French Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze (Ormolu) Cartel Wall Clock

An impressive and finely cast French Louis XVI style cartel clock of grand scale, designed for wall mounting and executed in richly chased gilt bronze (ormolu). The architectural case displays the refined neoclassical elegance associated with the late 18th century, incorporating classical motifs and exceptional sculptural detail throughout.

The clock is surmounted by a lidded urn finial flanked by pinecone and foliate ornament, with sweeping acanthus leaves and flowing drapery mounts cascading down the sides. Beneath the dial sits a boldly modelled mask, commonly interpreted as Apollo, accompanied by a radiating sunburst — a motif symbolising light, time and harmony.

The white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic outer minute markers, with finely pierced gilt-brass hands. The movement is an 8-day time and strike mechanism, traditionally striking the hours and half-hours on a bell.

Clocks of this distinguished model were produced by notable Parisian bronziers and clockmakers, including Jean-Baptiste Osmond and Prosper Roussel, and the design remained highly sought after with fine examples continuing into the 19th century.

A decorative and highly collectible statement piece, equally suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cartel clock is a wall-mounted timepiece framed by an ornate cast metal casing, popularised in 18th-century France. The Louis XVI style is characterised by neoclassical motifs, including symmetrical foliage, urn finials, classical masks, and refined geometric proportioning.

These clocks were predominantly cast in bronze and gilded using mercury amalgams (ormolu) to create a bright, durable finish. The clock dials were usually crafted from white enamel over copper, with painted Roman and Arabic numerals, housed behind convex glass doors.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast bronze with hand-chased detailing, showing precise craftsmanship on foliage and mask features. The gilding on original period pieces often displays subtle wear or patination in recessed areas, and movement plates are typically stamped by recognised French clockmakers.

Position the clock as a focal point on a neutral wall above a fireplace mantelpiece or side console table to highlight its sculptural silhouette. Combining classical gilt bronzes with minimalist modern furnishings creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and contemporary space.

Dust the gilded case gently with a soft microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding aggressive liquid polish or abrasive metal cleaners which strip original gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
