The 8 day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement.
LENTON. 9 High Street. CLAPHAM". The blued steel and matching hands being of trefoil design. Behind a cast brass, hinged bezel with a sight ring and snapped-in bowed glass.
Contained in a well-figured mahogany case. The pegged on dial surround has a moulded edge and the drop trunk has a side access door and is divided from the chisel bottom by a 3 side, flat ebony strip moulding. The chisel bottom has a flat, locking and cockbeaded door with an inlaid ivorene key escutcheon.
This is an exceptionally attractive little clock and though totally original, the smallest chisel bottom drop-dial that I have ever seen. The photographs do not serve it justice. Ebenezer Lenton is recorded as working circa 1878.
Dimensions: 16 1/2" high x 10" wide x 5 3/4" deep.
Condition: The movement has been well maintained and is reasonably clean and working well however, the pendulum suspension needs replacing. The dial, bezel and case are in restored condition but the dial has the original instructional spelling of the maker's name on the rear as proof of authenticity. The lock, catch and hinges are all sound and working properly and the general appearance of the case is good with no discernible damage or problems and is of a rich colour. Signs of age and usage are evident.
