The design was created by Christopher Dresser for Minton, introducing Japanese decorative influences into British porcelain production. His work transformed decorative design at the end of the 19th century and established a new visual language of modern ornament.
 
Museum examples of comparable Minton vases are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Collectors prize Dresser-designed Minton ceramics as key works of early modern design history.
