A fine and imposing English longcase clock housing an early 8-day brass movement signed by Edin Burgis, London. The square brass dial is richly detailed with a silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals and minute markers enclosing a finely matted centre. The upper section is fitted with a subsidiary seconds dial, while the lower centre incorporates a calendar aperture, a feature associated with higher-quality London work of the late 17th century.The dial is further enhanced by a set of applied gilt cherub spandrels, finely cast and chased each depicting winged cherub heads framed by scrolling foliate ornament. These early spandrels are characteristic of the late 17th century, preceding the heavier Rococo forms of the mid-18th century, and add both depth and richness to the dial.
