George III walnut longcase clock by Bentley London
 
This wonderful walnut longcase clock was made circa 1765.
 
It stands 262cms tall (8ft 7ins) in a slim case with a pagoda top hood, that is flanked by ball and spire finials with an eagle finial at the top.
 
There are fretwork panels to the front and sides. The brass capped pilasters are integral to the hood door.
 
The trunk has the long-broken arch door veneered in burr walnut, with chevron stringing and crossbanding. The plinth is similarly veneered and has a double skirt to the base.
 
The 12inch brass dial with seconds dial, calendar aperture, eagle and urn spandrels, and a strike/silent dial flanked by dolphin spandrels, having a matted centre with a silvered plaque which is engraved ‘James Bentley, London’.
 
The silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals and Arabic five minute markers.
 
The hands are of a blued steel.
 
The five-pillar movement is rack striking on a bell and has an anchor escapement.
 
The pendulum has a lenticular brass faced bob and the weights are also brass sleeved.
 
He was apprentice to Thomas Dore.
 
James Bentley is listed in Baillie as working in 1765, but he publishes no more information about Bentley apart from that date.
