Georgian Sunderland Blue Wrythened Glass Sugar Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a Sunderland blue, Georgian, wrythen-moulded sugar bowl dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the under side of the foot.

The bowl measures 11.5 cm (4.6 inches) in diameter at the turned inward rim. The bowl is wrythen-moulded and sits on a small extruded foot which measures 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter. The bowl is 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in height. There are a few small inclusions in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture. There are no chips, cracks, other significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It weighs 75 g. (~ 3 oz.).

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wrythened glass refers to glassware produced during the Georgian era that features a swirled or twisted ribbed pattern, created by blowing molten glass into a ribbed mould and twisting it during production.

Georgian coloured glassware was made using lead glass formulas mixed with metallic oxides, such as cobalt oxide to achieve deep blue tones, before being gathered and shaped by hand.

Authentic Georgian glass pieces typically exhibit a pontil mark on the underside of the base, small air inclusions within the glass, and subtle variations in thickness from hand-blowing.

Coloured glass vessels are best placed on window sills, sideboards, or open shelving where direct light can highlight the transparency and surface texture.

Antique glass should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water using a mild washing-up liquid, avoiding harsh chemicals, hot water, and dishwashers to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
