Delft pottery originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century, gaining prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries as European potteries sought to emulate imported Chinese blue and white porcelain.

Delftware is traditionally made from a buff-coloured clay body covered with a tin-lead glaze, known as an opaque white slip, which provides the smooth surface for hand-painted cobalt blue pigments before a final transparent lead glaze is applied.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit characteristic crazing, subtle imperfections from hand-thrown production, soft cobalt blue hues that may bleed slightly into the glaze, and period-specific factory marks on the underside.

These pieces function well as focal points on mantelpieces, sideboards, or open shelving, pairing effectively with neutral palettes, natural wood tones, and minimalist contemporary furnishings to highlight their historical character.

Care involves dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding immersion in water or chemical cleaning agents due to the porous nature of the earthenware body and delicate tin glaze.
