Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Concentric lathe turning rings inside each base: finished on an 18th-century hand lathe.
Scalloped petal base design: stylish English shape made popular from the 1750s.
Push-rod button inside the base: early mechanism designed to raise spent candle stubs.
Softened contours and old wax residue in crevices: generations of use and polishing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of eighteenth-century Georgian candlesticks is formed from cast brass with a polished warm brass finish, displaying soft reflections across their reflective metal surfaces. Each piece rests upon a scalloped petal-shaped base that supports a turned baluster stem with distinct ring mouldings and a simple flared sconce nozzle at the summit. The metal shows gentle surface patination and minor wear consistent with age, alongside visible seams from period construction techniques. Each candlestick measures 23.5 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, offering a balanced proportion for domestic display. They suit placement upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or occasional table within an English country house interior, bringing period metalwork into daily use.

FAQs

Petal base candlesticks are characteristic of early to mid-18th century metalwork, featuring a base shaped into rounded lobes or petals. These functional lighting pieces typically display turned baluster shafts and were cast in brass to illuminate Georgian interiors.

During this period, brass candlesticks were created using two-part sand casting methods. The hollow stems were cast in vertical halves and joined together with hard solder, after which the surface was hand-turned on a lathe and polished.

Authentic period examples often exhibit vertical join seams inside the hollow stem, evidence of hand-turning tool marks, and irregular wear on the underside of the base. Later reproduction pieces generally feature smooth machine finishing and modern threaded assembly.

Remove leftover wax by applying warm water rather than scraping with metal tools. To retain historical surface patination, gently clean with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised brass polish, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals.

Pairing brass candlesticks along a mantelpiece, sideboard centre, or dining table adds warmth and architectural structure. Mixing polished brass accents with natural timber surfaces or contemporary ceramics creates a balanced visual contrast.
