This Georgian antique English brass candlestick dates from the eighteenth century. The piece is formed from polished brass with a gold colour and has a turned baluster stem featuring a knopped column, an urn nozzle, and a square base decorated with shell corner motifs. The design derives from silver examples of the period and includes an internal push-ejector for removing spent candle stubs. The object stands 24 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. In a home today, this candlestick works well placed on a mantelpiece to bring traditional character to a room. The reflective metal surface shows bright highlights and deep shadows along the turned contours of the column and the stepped circular foot resting upon the ornate square base. The smooth finish highlights the balanced proportions of the stem structure and the intricate detailing of the cast corners on the base.

Georgian brass candlesticks, produced throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, are characteristically distinguished by baluster-turned stems, shaped knops, and cast bases featuring classical or Rococo ornamentation such as shell corner details.

These pieces were typically hand-cast in brass using copper and zinc alloys, often cast in vertical halves and brazed together or core-cast with hand-turned finishing details on a lathe.

Authentic period examples usually feature subtle vertical join seams from the casting process, hand-cut screw threads inside the base, substantial weight, and natural surface wear on the underside.

Position a brass candlestick on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard alongside minimalist ceramics and contemporary artwork to create balanced visual contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip age-earned patination, and apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal surface against oxidisation.
