Georgian Sunderland Blue Wrythened Glass Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl

Description

This is a Georgian, mouth-blown, wrythen-moulded, Sunderland Blue glass cream jug and sugar bowl dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The jug and bowl are in excellent condition for their age. This means of course that they show age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases consistent with some 200 years of use. They have rough pontil marks on the bases.

The jug is of baluster form in the Sunderland blue colourway, and measures 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) by 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the turned inward pouring rim. The jug is lightly wrythen-moulded. The jug ends in a base which measures 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter. The jug is 9.8 cm (3.9 inches) in height. The handle was first attached to the top of the jug and then finally attached near the base, finished off with a curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. It weighs 65 g. (~ 2 oz.). There are a couple of tiny inclusions and unburst bubbles in the metal of the jug dating from manufacture.

The bowl is of cup form in the Sunderland blue colourway and measures 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is wrythened in the same manner as the cream jug. The bowl ends in a base which measures 5.7 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter. The bowl is 9.7 cm (3.9 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. It weighs 135 g. (~ 5 oz.). There are a couple of tiny inclusions and unburst bubbles in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture.

FAQs

Georgian wrythened glassware features spiral fluting created by blowing glass into a ribbed mould and twisting it while hot. Popular in 18th-century Britain, particularly in glassmaking centres like Sunderland and Bristol, this technique added visual texture and structural strength to functional tableware.

Cobalt oxide was introduced into the molten glass batch to achieve the distinct deep blue colour. The vessels were formed using free-blowing or mould-blowing techniques, with hand-applied handles, foot rims, and visible pontil marks where the piece was detached from the iron rod.

Authentic pieces display a rough or ground pontil mark on the underside, minor variations in glass thickness, and tiny air bubbles known as seeds. Genuine Georgian items also feature hand-formed handles with folded or pinched terminals and slight asymmetry typical of hand-crafting.
