Pair of 19th Century Black Lacquered Chinese Compound Cabinets

19th century
Description

Pair of 19th century black lacquered chinese compound cabinets circa 1840.

Fine pair of qing-dynasty compound cabinets, in the ming style.  complete in their original blackened matt lacquer, which has taken on a lovely craquelure and light fading to the natural wood underneath.

Each cabinet comprises of 2 sections.  double door open storage in the top section, main body opens to a deep burgundy lacquered interior, with 2 fitted drawers and further storage.  pierced carving to bottom front edge.

Simple full moon brass hinges and lock plates complete with original pins.

This style of classical chinese cabinet is known as a compound cabinet. The top section is referred to as a hat box where hats and out-of-season clothes were stored. The main cabinet would have been a repository for everyday garments with bedding packed into the lower body of the cabinet. Some of these cabinets were so large that ladders were required to use them.

Expected minor surface marks and rubbing.  partial later replaced backboards. Very minor losses to carving.  increasingly rare items to find.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinese compound cabinet, traditionally known as a sijiangui or hat cabinet, is a two-part storage piece featuring a smaller top cabinet stacked on a larger main wardrobe base.

These pieces are typically constructed from softwoods or hardwoods coated with natural tree resin lacquer, combined with hand-hammered brass hardware including circular faceplates and drop handles.

Authentic period cabinets display traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural wear and craquelure on the lacquer surface, and hand-forged brass mounts with historic patination.

They serve as high-impact storage solutions in living areas, dining rooms, or large hallways, creating a dramatic focal point when juxtaposed against contemporary minimalist decor.

Keep lacquer work away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking; clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemical detergents.
