Description

Pair of Large Antique Bohemian Cranberry Glass Vases with Gilded Accents, c.1910

An impressive matched pair of early 20th-century Bohemian cranberry glass vases, richly decorated with bold gilt enamel in a floral Art Nouveau style. Crafted from thick, high-quality glass, each vase displays an elegant baluster form with striking decorative presence.

Standing at 36cm in height the pair makes a commanding statement. Despite being over 110 years old, both vases remain structurally sound and visually captivating. There is light wear to the gilt, minor age-related flea-bites, and one small chip to the edge of one vase, though none of these diminish their overall impact.

With their glowing cranberry tone and ornate detailing, this rare pair would serve beautifully as centerpieces or prized additions to any serious collection.

Bohemian cranberry glass, also known as ruby or gold ruby glass, gained immense popularity during the 19th century and early 20th century. It is produced by adding fine gold chloride to molten glass, which creates its characteristic rich pinkish-red hue upon reheating.

These items are crafted from blown glass tinted with gold oxide and are frequently embellished with hand-applied gold leaf or enamel detailing, often featuring intricate floral or botanical motifs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-blown imperfections such as pontil marks on the base, minor bubbles within the glass, and hand-applied gilding that shows natural wear consistent with age rather than machine-printed patterns.

These statement pieces work effectively as focal points on a mantelpiece or sideboard, contrasting against neutral surfaces or paired with complementary jewel tones to add depth and historical character to a room.

Clean the glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives or soaking that could damage the delicate gilded surface. Always handle with clean hands to prevent skin oils from degrading the metallic finish.
