C.1810 Masonic Engraved Rummer Glass with Lemon Squeezer Base – Georgian Period

19th century
Description

A rare and beautifully preserved Georgian rummer glass, circa 1810, featuring Masonic engravings on all five sides and a distinctive lemon squeezer foot. This ceremonial piece blends symbolic depth with masterful craftsmanship.

• Side One: A Star of David within a circle, flanked by architectural arches and columns, evoking sacred geometry and structural symbolism.

• Side Two: A crescent moon and stars, a classical column with a sphere, and the all-seeing eye, representing cosmic order, enlightenment, and divine oversight.

• Side Three: A radiant all-seeing eye, a leafy branch (likely acacia, symbolizing immortality), and geometric forms reflecting Masonic ideals of balance and virtue.

• Side Four: A shield-like emblem, possibly a lodge crest or symbolic coat of arms, framed by scrollwork and ornamental flourishes.

• Side Five: A composition of triangles, squares, and lattice patterns, etched with precision to form a decorative and geometric tableau—suggesting themes of order, structure, and craftsmanship central to Masonic philosophy.

The glass is hand-blown, with a solid stem and a square base featuring the classic lemon squeezer design, typical of early 19th-century glassware. Its clarity and symmetry, combined with the depth of symbolic engraving, make it a ritual object of historical significance.

Perfect for collectors of Freemasonry memorabilia, Georgian glass, or symbolic art, this rummer stands as a testament to the intersection of ceremony, craft, and esoteric tradition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A rummer is a large type of glass drinking vessel popular in Great Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, typically featuring a wide bowl, short stem, and heavy base.

A lemon squeezer base was made by pressing molten lead glass into a two-part square mould, creating a stepped, terraced foot with a recessed dome or ribs on the underside.

Authentic period pieces feature shallow, copper-wheel engraving with crisp Masonic emblems such as the compasses, square, star, and arch, often combined with wear consistent with age on the base.

Antique glass rummers can be displayed inside a lit cabinet, arranged along a sideboard top, or placed on a library shelf to highlight their engraved detail and optical quality.

Georgian lead glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoided from extreme temperature changes, and dried gently with a soft microfibre cloth.
