Geo III Mahogany 8 Day Longcase Long Case Grandfather Clock

18th century
Description

This is one of the nicest quality provincial Longcase clocks I have seen. It is by John Bancroft of Scarborough who worked there from 1770 to 1807. He is reputed to have come from London which may explain some of the features of this clock.

The case is in beautifully figured Mahogany with satinwood inlayed details.

The good quality 8 Day movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a very decorative painted dial with the unusual feature for a painted dial clock of a strike/silent selector for the chime. It also has a concentric center date indicator.

The case is in lovely unrestored condition, is a lovely colour and has retained its original finish.

There are a couple of minor repairs to the veneer on the base and a couple of hairline cracks, one to the base and one above the trunk door. However considering it is over 200 years old it is in pretty good shape.

The movement is in good working order and keeping good time.
