Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain and pottery traditionally produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, originating in the 17th century before undergoing a major revival in the 19th century during the Meiji period.

Kutani pieces are crafted from high-fired white clay and are typically characterised by overglaze enamel decoration, prominently featuring iron red, gold, green, purple, and blue pigments in intricate pictorial designs.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-painted artisan signatures or kiln marks on the underside, heavier potting typical of the era, and meticulous polychrome enamel work with fine gold detailing known as kinrande.

Place the vessel as a focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, allowing its rich colour palette and intricate patterns to contrast against neutral walls or minimalist surroundings.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using chemical cleaning agents, abrasive materials, or immersion in water, particularly for pieces with delicate overglaze gilt highlights.
