Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A porcelain clock garniture is a decorative set comprising a central mantel clock flanked by two matching porcelain vases or urns. Popularised in nineteenth-century France, these sets were designed as symmetrical decorative ensembles specifically for display on fireplace mantelpieces.

These clock sets were crafted using glazed hard-paste ceramic or porcelain, frequently finished with cobalt blue glazes, hand-painted floral motifs, and gilded accents. The internal clockwork mechanisms were constructed from brass and steel with enamelled dial plates.

Authentic pieces usually feature stamped French clockmaker movements, such as those by Vincenti or Japy Freres, visible on the rear brass backplate. Additionally, inspect the porcelain for hand-painted details rather than modern transfer prints, along with natural age-related patination on the brass and gilding.

Place the clock at the centre of a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, arranging the two matching side vases symmetrically on either side. Balancing the set against clean architectural lines or modern artwork creates an engaging contrast between contemporary and classical styles.

Dust the porcelain exterior regularly using a dry microfiber cloth or soft brush, avoiding water or chemical cleansers that could damage the gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a professional horologist to ensure accurate timekeeping and proper lubrication.
