Georgian Rare Multi Spiral Air Twist Wine Glass, Trumpet Bowl, Vermicular Collar

Description

This is a rare Georgian, English multi spiral air twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a multi spiral air twist stem which has a medial vermicular collar. Vermicular collars are scarce on Georgian glasses and even rarer on trumpet bowl glasses. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.4 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 16 cm (6.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of unburst bubbles in the metal of the bowl which date from manufacture.

Lead glass weighing in at 205 g. (~ 7 oz.).

Air twist wine glasses were introduced in Britain during the mid-18th century, predominantly manufactured between 1740 and 1770. They are characterised by decorative spiral patterns of trapped air within the glass stem, created as a stylistic response to glass taxation based on weight.

Craftsmen introduced air bubbles into a cylinder of molten lead glass by pricking it with a tool or using a spiked mould. The glassmaker then drew out and twisted the gathering of glass, stretching the air pockets into precise internal spiral threads before attaching the bowl and foot.

Authentic period pieces feature lead glass construction, which exhibits a distinct weight and greyish hue under light. Look for hand-drawn stem construction showing slight irregularities, a pontil mark on the underside of the conical foot, and natural wear consistent with age around the rim and base.
