This pair of Edwardian bedside cupboards brings classic English country house style to a bedroom. Constructed from satinwood with boxwood stringing, the cabinets display a warm golden brown timber finish. Each piece has an arched gallery back, a single door with central diamond marquetry panels, and slender tapered square legs ending in original metal castors. Decorative brass drop handles are fitted to the right of each door, while delicate hand-painted floral swags adorn the vertical stiles framing the cabinet fronts. One door shows a minor surface crack on the timber panel. The cupboards measure 84 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, with a total height of 96 cm including the rear upstand. Placed beside a bed, these compact cabinets provide convenient bedside surface space and enclosed storage for books, lamps, and nighttime essentials. They suit traditional and period bedrooms alike, adding refined Edwardian character and practical utility to domestic interior schemes.

FAQs

Edwardian satinwood furniture, created during the early 20th century, frequently draws inspiration from late 18th-century Neo-Classical and Sheraton designs. It features pale timber, crossbanded borders, geometric marquetry, and slender, square-tapered silhouettes.

Cabinetmakers during this era typically applied satinwood veneers over solid pine or mahogany cores. Decorative elements frequently incorporated boxwood inlays, hand-painted floral detailing, and cast brass handles.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-finished joinery, original brass hardware displaying natural oxidisation, and slight variations in hand-painted motifs. Satinwood also exhibits a distinct silky grain chatoyancy under direct light.

These slender cabinets work beside upholstered bed frames in modern bedrooms or as slim side tables in living areas. Their warm golden tones complement neutral paint schemes, natural linen textiles, and modern lighting.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year along the grain. Position pieces away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement and finish fading.
