Antique Pair of Art Nouveau Porcelain Vases, Decorated by Ernst Wahliss, Austria, C. 1895

19th century
Description

An authentic pair of Art Nouveau porcelain vases decorated by the workshop of Ernst Wahliss, a prominent Austrian designer of the late 19th century. The porcelain blanks were produced by the Rudolstadt Works in Thuringia, Germany, and subsequently decorated in Austria for export. The vases are finished in deep cobalt blue with gilded scrollwork and neoclassical ornamentation. Each bears the “Drei Gewehre” (Three Rifles) mark used by Rudolstadt, alongside the phrase “Manufactured in Austria” — a designation reflecting the commercial practice of enhancing export appeal through Austrian branding. The presence of such mark indicates that the vases were produced exactly for the American market, as such export markings were commonly used to comply with U.S. import regulations. The Wahliss workshop is well-documented for producing high-quality decorative porcelain for the international luxury market, combining technical precision with aesthetic refinement. These vases are of particular interest to collectors of Art Nouveau porcelain and Central European decorative arts.

Condition and Dimensions:

Vase 1: Height 22.5 cm, Diameter 12.5 cm, Weight 446 g — Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration.

Vase 2: Height 22.5 cm, Diameter 12.5 cm, Weight 490 g — One small chip to the rim, and minor enamel losses at the handle base; otherwise excellent.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau Austrian porcelain, produced around the turn of the 20th century, is characterised by organic forms, flowing lines, and natural motifs such as flora and fauna. Regional makers like Ernst Wahliss produced distinct wares featuring intricate gilding, hand-painted details, and sculpted architectural or plant-form handles.

These decorative vessels were typically crafted from fine hard-paste porcelain or earthenware, slip-cast into complex curved forms. Surface decoration involved hand-painted enamel glazes combined with liquid gold applications fired at precise temperatures to achieve durable gilded detailing.

Authentic period ceramics usually feature stamped, incised, or painted maker marks, crown symbols, or impress numbers on the unglazed underside. Original pieces exhibit fine hand-painted variations, precise porcelain casting, and natural surface wear to gilding consistent with age.

Displaying decorative porcelain on polished stone, dark timber sideboards, or glass display shelves creates a balanced contrast between antique detail and clean modern surfaces. Placing them near subtle ambient light highlights the reflective gilded accents and deep enamel glazes.

Maintain porcelain by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or fine feather duster. Avoid soaking in water, using abrasive pads, or applying liquid chemical solvents, as harsh cleaning can wear away delicate hand-painted enamels and gold leaf highlights.
