This nineteenth century French pottery vase and cover comes from Edmé Samson of Paris in the Rococo Revival style, copying an eighteenth century Chelsea Porcelain design. The piece uses white porcelain decorated with bright coloured enamel glazes, a domed finial lid, cobalt blue panels, hand-painted exotic bird motifs, green foliage, and gold leaf gilding. Light surface wear appears on the glaze alongside a faux Chelsea gold anchor mark on the base. Standing 16.5 cm in height, the vase has a practical scale for display on a mantelpiece in a French Chateau interior. It adds traditional ornamental character to a living room, study, or hallway surface today.

Founded in Paris during the nineteenth century, Edme Samson et Cie produced high-grade porcelain pieces inspired by famous European and Asian manufactories, including Chelsea, Meissen, and Chinese Export workshops.

These lidded vases were manufactured using hard-paste porcelain, painted with overglaze enamel pigments, and highlighted with hand-applied gold leaf gilding.

Samson ceramics often feature specific maker marks, such as an intersected letter S or modified historical factory marks, combined with dense hard-paste body material and detailed enamel brushwork.

Position the vase on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or open bookshelf alongside modern artwork and structured books to create a balanced contrast between historic ceramic art and contemporary design.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding immersion in water or exposure to abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage overglaze enamelling and gilding.
