English Georgian Oak Longcase Clock, ‘Black Forest’ Carving ‘1782’

18th century
Description

Rare English Georgian Oak Grandfather Longcase Clock with ‘Back Forest’ Carving and Brass Harvest Scenes Spandrels.

Interestingly the Brass Dial for Katterns of Thrapston Northamptonshire has Raised Harvest Scene Spandrels in Each Corner. Its 30 Hour Movement has been Checked, Serviced and Tested - Good Working Order.

There are 2 entries for Daniel Katterns in Brian Loomes’s Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World but, as one is at Thrapston and the other at Thrapstone, they must surely be the same Clockmaker.

Daniel Katterns is Listed as a Clocksmith and was apprenticed to John Giscard at Thrapton in 1738 and worked circa 1765-1795 also at Thrapston(e) .

One wonders whether his origins were from Germany as There is A Black Forest Carved Head Adornment to The Hood.

Also of interest is the Reverse Openning of the Hood Door. As with the Trunk Door, Doors Usually Open with the Hinges on the Right. However, in this instance, the Hood Door is Hinged on the Left.

Other Attractive Features of this Clock Include the Trunk Door Glass Lens, the 3 Brass Round Finials and the Brass Door Furniture. On the Inside of the Trunk Door is An Old Clock Retailers Labels. One 1782.

Height 69.25in or 186cm excluding the Finials - 191cm with Round Brass Finials

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
