Georgian Rib-moulded Small Sweetmeat Glass or Patch Stand

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English, rib-moulded balustroid sweetmeat glass or patch stand dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1740. It is the second time this glass has passed through our hands.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a slightly wrythened rib-moulded double ogee-shaped bowl measuring 8.7 cm (3.5 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl sits on a short, knopped stem that ends in a panel-moulded foot which measures 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter. The glass is 6.2 cm (2.5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collector's sticker on the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Provenance: With us (May 2019). The Graham Slater Collection.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A patch stand or sweetmeat glass is an elevated glass vessel popular during the 18th century, designed to hold sweetmeats, candied fruits, or cosmetic beauty patches. These pedestal dishes featured decorative moulding, stem knops, and wide shallow bowls to present small items at social gatherings.

They were predominantly crafted from lead crystal glass, known for its refractive index, density, and clarity. The pieces were hand-blown or pattern-moulded, often featuring ribbing, cut facets, or knopped stems fused together while molten.

Authentic Georgian glassware typically displays a pontil mark on the underside of the base where it was detached from the glassmakers iron, alongside minor air inclusions or striations within the glass. Natural wear patterns, such as fine scratches on the foot rim where the item rested on surfaces, are also key indicators.

These small pedestal glasses function as trinket dishes on a dressing table, bedside table, or sideboard top for holding rings, cufflinks, or small keepsakes. They can also be integrated into dining settings or curated cabinet displays alongside other glass pieces.

Clean by hand using lukewarm water, a mild detergent, and a soft cloth, avoiding hot water to prevent thermal shock. Do not use dishwashers, and dry immediately with a soft towel to prevent water spot marks.
