Description

A beautiful and extremely well made antique Oriental lacquered chinoiserie wedding cabinet. This was made in East Asia, it dates from the early-mid 19th century likely around 1820-1850.

These models are called wedding cabinets as they were often bestowed upon married couples, they are more commonly seen in red, it is very rare to find one in black like this.

It is made from solid elm, beautifully lacquered in black with gold butterfly decorations all over the front. There is lots of storage space inside with a removable shelf and a lower tray covered cabinet section.

The condition is excellent for its age, with just the right amount of wear and patina, to be expected from a piece that is nearly 200 years old.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Traditionally given as dowry gifts to newlywed couples in China, these large cabinets were used to store clothing, valuables, and linens, often featuring auspicious motifs symbolising fortune and a happy marriage.

These pieces are typically constructed from native timbers such as elm or pine, finished with multiple layers of natural tree lacquer, and adorned with hand-painted artwork and traditional brass or copper hardware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-forged metal hardware, natural wear and crazing in the lacquer finish, and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Such cabinets function effectively as statement storage pieces in living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways, contrasting well against minimalist or contemporary backdrops to highlight their intricate artwork and deep colour.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the lacquer from cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical polishes.
