Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920 Chinoiserie cupboard stands in black lacquer with colourful applied and painted decoration. The exterior displays detailed floral stone inlay alongside bird motifs, complemented by round brass drop handles on the two upper drawers. Below the drawers sits an open display niche on the right, balanced by a pair of lower doors that open to reveal a full-length interior shelf. The cabinet rests on low bracket feet with scrolling aprons and linear gold painted trim framing the edges. Practical for daily storage, the piece measures 91 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. It fits well in a living room, hallway, or bedroom to hold small household items while displaying decorative ornaments within the open niche. The construction shows good used condition with only minor signs of use to the finish.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to decorative arts influenced by East Asian traditions, emerging in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as craftspeople imitated Asian lacquering techniques, landscapes, and natural motifs.

These pieces typically feature timber frames finished with multiple coats of dark lacquer or varnish, complemented by relief inlays made of carved soapstone, mother-of-pearl, or bone, alongside brass drop handles.

Authentic pieces showcase gentle natural wear to the lacquer work, hand-carved relief details, brass hardware with original patination, and traditional joinery within internal drawers and casings.

A black Chinoiserie cabinet serves as a focal point, pairing effectively with neutral backdrop walls, warm brass accents, contemporary artwork, or textured upholstery in sophisticated eclectic spaces.

Keep lacquered furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water.
