Carriage clocks originated in France during the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, officers, and the wealthy to carry during journeys.

These timepieces typically feature a heavy cast brass or gilded case fitted with thick bevelled glass panels to protect the delicate mechanical movement inside.

Authenticity is identified by examining the platform escapement, hand-cut gear wheels, serial numbers, makers marks on the backplate, and the weight of the solid brass casing.

Place the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk to add a touch of metallic warmth and traditional craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Keep the movement clean and lubricated by a professional horologist every few years, dust the brass gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid using harsh chemical polishes.
