The box dates to the late Victorian era c.1890 with the panelled front door beautifully inlaid with Satinwood fan motifs, a large fan to the top where the fan-shaped transom would be above the door and a decorative marquetry inlay either side of the door completes this work of art. The cabinet has been created with three graduated steps up to the front door.
The box comes complete with a working key and an unusual brass mounted lock escutcheon to the front with the front half of the escutcheon when pulled opening the catch.
The interior is quite sensational, all fitted out with plenty of room for stationery, with the central compartments that can be pulled forward, making it easy to get to stationery and pushes back into the cabinet when finished. The top has four compartments with Ivory labels "Paid" & "Unpaid" for bills and "Answered" & "Unanswered" for letters.
The interior of the left-hand door has a black leather pad, fitted to accept pens, letter openers & page turners, this is removable when in use. The other door interior has a removable slate for notes and a wooden pocket below, perfect for the storage of small cards, or business cards.
There is a drawer at the bottom opened with the solid flush brass handle to revealing space for more papers, nibs, pens, pencils with a removable pen tray and either side two compartments for inkwells.
You won't see one again (nor will I), a grand and impressive statement piece to please. The footprint measures 14" wide x 12 1/2" deep x 19" tall to top of arch.
