Cloisonne is an ancient metalworking technique developed in the Near East and later perfected in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It involves soldering thin metal strips onto a vessel base to create partitioned designs, which are subsequently filled with enamel paste and fired.

Traditional cloisonne pieces are constructed on a brass or copper body. Fine copper or gilt-bronze wires form the pattern outlines, while mineral-based enamel powders mixed into paste provide the colourful vitreous finish after high-temperature firing.
