Description

Technical Description

A magnificent set of six French late 19th century engraved wine glasses.

They have round funnel bowls beutifully engraved with fruiting vine and slice cutting to the base. Two facet cut angular shoulder knops leading down to thin slice cut baluster knop. Six pointed star cut foot.

The glasses are unmarked, however we are confident that they are French and also Baccarat. We say Baccarat as the style of the six pointed star cut foot is very distictive and is identical to marked examples of Baccarat from the same period. The stars are all hand cut so no two are identical but the style is always the same. Also the small facet cut angular knops are also seen on Barcarat glass. We have included a Baccarat star cut foot from a marked glass as a comparison.

A wonderful set all in superb condition.

Baccarat crystal has its origins in the village of Baccarat in eastern France, established by royal decree in the mid-18th century. It grew to become one of the most prestigious glassworks in the world, supplying monarchs and elite households throughout the 19th century with high-clarity crystal and intricate hand-engraved motifs.

Antique Baccarat pieces are crafted from high-lead crystal, which provides exceptional refractive brilliance, clarity, and weight. Traditional manufacturing involved mouth-blowing molten glass into moulds or free-hand forming, followed by skilled artisans using hand-wheel cutting and acid-etching or wheel-engraving techniques to apply detailed surface designs.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century often feature acid-etched circular factory stamps introduced later, though many early items relied on paper labels that have since worn away. Collectors look for the characteristic weight, high-pitched ring of lead crystal, exceptional clarity, and the meticulous precision of the hand-cut facets and engraved details.

Antique crystal glassware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, utilized on a bar cart to catch ambient light, or incorporated into formal dining settings to add texture and historical contrast. Pairing these pieces with modern minimalist tableware allows the intricate hand-engraved details to stand out as focal points.

Antique crystal should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature shifts to prevent thermal shock and cracking. Drying immediately with a lint-free linen cloth helps maintain the polish and prevents water spots on the delicate crystal surfaces.
