Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Pierced brass butterfly hinges: early to mid-18th-century hardware.
Raised chinoiserie decoration with fine craquelure: natural ageing of early japanning.
Rough hand-sawn backboards: traditional 18th-century cabinet body construction.
Red ochre painted interior: untouched period finish inside the cupboard.
Hand-shaped tiered show cresting: distinctive early Georgian provincial design.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Measuring 116 cm high, 59 cm wide and 40 cm deep, the piece fits neatly into a room corner to provide storage. Placed in a living room, dining room or hallway, the cupboard serves as a practical display and storage unit for glassware, books or tableware, while adding a traditional period accent to interior schemes.

FAQs

These cupboards feature European-made timber frames decorated with Chinoiserie paintwork or japanning, imitating East Asian lacquer techniques popular throughout the eighteenth century.

They were typically constructed from softwoods like pine or hardwoods like oak, which were then primed, painted with dark shellac or lacquer varnish, and finished with brass H-hinges or butterfly hinges.

Authentic pieces generally show hand-sawn timber backboards, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and age-related wear or fine craquelure across the painted lacquer finish.

Position the cabinet in an underutilised room corner to create a focal point, pairing its dark tones against neutral or heritage-painted walls.

Keep the cupboard away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking; clean gently using a soft, dry dust cloth without commercial polish or water.
