Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffer is a heavy wooden chest with a hinged lid, traditionally used for storing valuables, linens, and personal possessions during the Renaissance period. Walnut was a favoured hardwood in continental Europe during this era due to its dense grain and suitability for detailed carving.

16th-century coffers were primarily constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut or oak, joined with mortise and tenon joints held by wooden pegs. Iron hand-forged hardware, including lock plates and strap hinges, provided security and structural strength.

Authentic coffers from this period feature hand-hewn timber surfaces, peg construction rather than modern nails or screws, hand-forged ironwork showing oxidisation, and natural wear around the base, handles, and lock mechanisms.

An antique coffer can function as a central coffee table, a statement piece at the foot of a bed, or a functional storage bench in an entryway, providing rich historical texture alongside contemporary furnishings.

Position the chest away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood movement or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber and maintain its original patina.
