Description

Why No 4? - The reverse of the dial is enscribed with No 4. Was this the 4th Dial that this workman made or the 4th clock he made or is it because the Movement is also marked 4? If the latter, then the 4 on the dial indicates the case/movement that the dial goes with.

The case is Ebonised with Boulle Inlay of Brass and Pewter. The Enamelled Dial is framed by an Octaginal surround. Height 22in or 56cm.

The Eight Day Two Train Stiking Movement by W&H (Winterhalder and Hoffmeier - one of the Very Best German Clockmakers) has been Checked, Serviced, Tested and is Offered in Good & Full Antique Working Order.

Overall this would have been owned by a well to do family or in a professional managers office and not a humdrum working environment or school.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drop dial wall clock features an upper dial section and a lower trunk or drop case that houses the pendulum, a style popularised during the 19th century in offices, railway stations, and homes.

These timepieces typically utilise solid timber frames finished with ebonisation to simulate expensive ebony, often embellished with brass and tortoiseshell marquetry known as Boullework, alongside paper or painted dials.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-painted dial, the mechanical brass fusee movement, the dovetail joints within the wooden case, and the natural age-related patina on the timber and brass.

Mount the clock as a focal point against a neutral wall in a hallway or study, allowing its dark finish and intricate detailing to provide a striking contrast to contemporary surroundings.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources, ensure it is hung plumb on a secure wall bracket, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
