A sunburst wall clock, also known as an horloge soleil, features a central dial surrounded by radiating carved or metal rays. The motif originated in France during the reign of King Louis XIV and experienced major revivals during the Art Deco and mid-20th-century design eras.

Traditional giltwood clocks are constructed from hand-carved wooden frames finished with a layer of gesso and covered in genuine gold leaf. The clock face is typically glazed with glass, enclosing a mechanical brass movement and printed dial.

Authentic pieces display natural wood grain under the gilded surface, joinery marks where individual rays attach to the core frame, and gentle wear to the gold leaf showing underlying clay bole or timber. Modern reproductions often use molded resin or uniform sprayed metallic paint instead of carved wood.
