FAQs

A pier cabinet is a narrow piece of furniture designed specifically to fit against the wall space between two windows, known as the pier, and became widely popular in Victorian drawing rooms for displaying ornaments.

These cabinets typically feature a softwood carcass veneered in highly figured burr walnut, accented with boxwood and exotic wood marquetry or stringing, often complemented by gilt-bronze or brass mounts and glass doors.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, hand-applied French polish finishes, and period-appropriate internal linings such as velvet.

It functions effectively as a focal display piece in contemporary living spaces, contrasting sharply against minimalist neutral walls while housing collections of ceramics or glassware.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to maintain the French polished finish.
