FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a layer of sterling silver to a copper core, a technique widely used from the mid-18th century until the mid-19th century when electroplating was introduced.

These items were constructed by fusing sterling silver and copper sheets together under heat, then hammering, spinning, or soldering the composite metal into the desired form, often with added silver wire borders.

Authentic pieces often reveal a faint reddish copper show-through along high-wear edges, seams, or where the silver has worn thin over time, distinguishing them from solid silver and later electroplated wares.

This piece can be styled as a functional desk accessory for holding pens, incorporated into a bar cart display, or used as a decorative container for fresh florals in a traditional or transitional interior.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and a mild silver polish specifically formulated for plated items, avoiding excessive rubbing to prevent exposing the underlying copper base.
